CORROSION CASTS. We will draw the most fragile collection of the museum — corrosion preparations — combined with various visually similar forms of nature. We will employ all drawing techniques we learned to use earlier — graphite, ink, charcoal and water colours.

Artist Laimdota Malle: “In the last class of the course the participants will be offered an opportunity to choose from all materials they will have tried earlier — pencils, graphites, colour inks, water colours etc. We will study the preparations through a magnifying glass and also as a part of a setting including corrosion preparations and forms of nature. We will sketch, draw and paint close-ups or things from a distance, we will study and compare the similarities and differences between us and the nature.”

Corrosion preparations were made filling the blood vessels of an organ or bronchi in the lungs with a fast hardening substance. After the liquid hardened the tissue part of the organ was removed. As a result, a precise, detailed, three-dimensional cast of the internal network of an organ could be obtained. Arteries were usually filled with a red, veins — with blue, bronchi — with yellow substance. The collection includes approximately 200 specimens made of human organs and organs of various animals. The exact recipe of used to make the preparations has not been preserved to our day.

In anatomy or art, no prior knowledge is necessary. Take the drawings created during the lessons with you and surprise your family and friends!

The workshop fee is 25 EUR (including all necessary materials and light refreshments).
